Trauma and Resilience in Social Care Work

Students will learn about the various forms of trauma and will build an understanding of how trauma affects individuals across the lifespan. The concept of resilience will be explored and students will acquire a knowledge of resilience-led approaches to practice when working with trauma within a social care setting. Students will develop skills and a knowledge of tools and interventions that can be used with service users who have experienced trauma. As social care work is dynamic and evolving, the syllabus content may be expanded on or modified to reflect practice developments.In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.

Understanding Trauma

Defining trauma. Types of trauma. Cognition and perception in trauma experience. Impact of trauma on the body and self. Physiological changes to body and brain.

Trauma through the eyes of the child

Trauma in childhood. Adverse Childhood Experiences. Complex and relational trauma. Indicators of traumatic stress in children and adolescents. Therapeutic interventions that can help the healing process. Power of play, creative arts, story-telling, sand play.

Trauma and adulthood

Childhood trauma experience and impact on future health and relationships. ACE research study. Trauma in adulthood. Indicators of traumatic stress. Interventions for trauma healing

Understanding resilience

Resilience frameworks. Understanding resilience as multidimensional and dynamic. Factors influencing resilience. Ecological approaches to understanding resilience. Promoting resilience in service users. Supporting early attachments, building social networks and enhancing self-esteem and self-efficacy.

Practical applications for working with service users

Utilising the therapeutic relationship. Trauma informed practice. Creating safe physical and emotional spaces for service users. Resilience-led approaches to practice. Self-awareness and emotional regulation. Trauma and the social care worker, self care and compassionate fatigue.
