This module introduces students to the properties, effects and measurement of air and water pollutants. It also outlines national challenges facing air and water quality in Ireland and introduces students to the processes involved in wastewater treatment.
Health effects and monitoring of ground-level pollutants; global patterns in air pollution; indoor air pollution classes; characteristics of water pollutants; general techniques in water analysis measurement of atmospheric pollutants macro invertebrate biotic indicator groups; The WFD; the CAFÉ Directive; National challenges facing air quality (e.g. Smoky coal ban; agricultural impacts on air quality; traffic emissions [diesel, petrol, biofuels], Peat burning, etc.) and water quality (e.g. agriculture, urban WwTW, Industrial discharges, THMs in drinking water; etc.).
