This module gives students an introduction to statics and structural mechanics
The aim of this module is enable students:
- To acquire the basic understanding of statics and forces and their effect on a body.
- To determine shear forces and bending moments on a simple beam.

Forces
Properties of a force, components of a force, resolution of coplanar forces, conditions of equilibrium, graphical methods for determining forces, Bow’s Notation, Link polygons, resolution of forces at a joint.
Stress, strain, Young’s Modulus
Evaluation of yield stress, ultimate stress, stress/strain graphs.
Shear force and bending moment
Introduction to shear force and bending moments, types of load (distributed and concentrated) calculation of reactions, shear force and bending moment diagrams, moment of force about an axis. Frames.
