This module will introduce students to social policy and social service provision in Ireland. Students will become familiar with social policy issues and concepts relevant to social care workers. Social policies will be assessed using principles of social justice and human rights. As social policy is an ongoing and dynamic subject the syllabus content will be expanded or modified, as the case may be, to reflect developments in social policy set out in this module.In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.

Explore the concepts of neoliberalism, democracy, the political spectrum. Social indicators and social planning. An overview of welfare provision in Ireland . Case studies which review the needs for welfare, social and public services to ensure that our society meets its citizens' human rights.
The development and Implementation of social policies
A review of a series of social policies and their implications for particular groups in society pertinent to disability, mental health, housing and homelessness, poverty, health, education, employment, social protection, children, older people asylum seekers and refugees and the Traveller Community.
