Applied Social Care 2

To provide students with a knowledge of a human rights based approach and the key principles underpinning this. To identify ethical considerations in social care work and legislation underpinning work with children, adolescents and vulnerable adults. To introduce the student to an overview of the care system in Ireland.To explore the students use of self in social care work.A minimun of 75% attendance is required for this module. As Social care is an ongoing and dynamic subject the syllabus content will be expanded or modified, as the case may be, to reflect developments and changes in policy and legislation. In order for a student to progress to Applied Social Care 2 he/she must have successfully completed Applied Social Care 1.In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.

Service User Needs

To recognise service users as individuals with their own individual needs adapting a Human Rights Based Approach incorporating rights, dignity, autonomy promoting equality, social justice and social inclusion. The student will examine the role of advocacy and empowerment.A Risk versus Resiliency Perspective & Solution Based Approaches when working with children and young people will be explored.

Ethical Considerations in Social Care work

To explore ethical challenges that may face social care workers in practice, such as confidentiality, professional boundaries and respecting the client’s rights , self-determination and being aware of conflicts of interests. To explore the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics laid out by CORU 2017, to provide ethical guidance and understand the concept of fitness to practice. Limits of Confidentiality will also be examined.The student will recognise the impact of personal values and life experience on professional practice by examine their own values and beliefs and what motivated them to pursue a career in social care work.

Exploring Self in Social Care Practice

The student will begin to evaluate and reflect critically on their own self in social care practice. Gibb’s & Kolb’s model of reflective practice will be explored and the use of supervision in social care to improve practice and professional development. Collingwood’s model Three stage framework will be examined.

Legislation,Children's First Act 2015 & The Vulnerable Adults Act 2006

To identify and explore key principles of best practice in Child Protection and welfare and legislation supporting these principles. Identify best practice in accordance with Children’s First and other relevant documentation and legislation Students will complete E-Learning Cert of Tulsa on line safe guarding training. The Vulnerable Adult Act 2006 will be examined by the students.

Overview of the Irish Care system.

Children and young People in care settingsResidential Care, Foster Care and Aftercare will be will be explored. Legislation that supports this.The students will evaluate HIQA reports for Residential Care Services and Foster Care Services. The student will examine supports for children who experience separation and loss in a care setting.
