Module Overview

Society and Social Care

To introduce students to Sociological perspectives of marginalisation and social exclusion, poverty and power relationship. To explore the experiences of specific groups of marginalised people in society from a sociological perspective and how society is shaped by social stratification, education and mass media.In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.

Society and Inequality

Sociology perspectives of marginalization and social exclusion. Social justice. Discrimination and inequality. Sociology in a global society. Power and power relations. Poverty and social deprivation.

Sociology and Education

Educational inequality and disadvantage. Factors contributing to educational inequality. Sociological accounts of educational inequality. Bourdieu and cultural capital. Social stratification. Case studies on marginalized groups: working class young people, travellers, refugees/asylum seekers, people in residential care, people with disabilities

Sociology and Mass media

Understandings of mass media. Ownership and control. Representation and stereotyping in the media. Content analysis as research method. Technology and social media.
