To introduce students to the concept of Sociology. To apply the use of sociology to the role of the Social Care worker. To apply sociological theory to the study of society and social care practice. Inequality in Irish society will be explored, making links with the practice of social care. The content of the module will be updated on an ongoing basis to reflect new learning and development in this area. In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.

Key sociological concepts and their application to Social Care practice. Exploring the importance of sociology and the study of society for those working in social care.
Key Sociological Theory
Founding fathers of sociology: Marx, Weber, Durkheim. Theoretical perspectives of functionalism, conflict theory and interactionism
Culture and socialisation
Theory and application of socialisation looking at Irish society and exploring the influence of culture. Sociological perspectives on family, gender, demographics, race and ethnicity will be introduced.

Exploring inequality in Irish society and its relationship to social care practice
