Introduction to Psychology

The module aims to introduce students to psychology as an area of human inquiry. Students are presented with an overview of the diverse scope of the subject matter of psychology -namely human behaviour and mental processing. The module traces the evolution of psychology as a separate scientific discipline. It examines current theoretical perspectives in psychology. The module serves to prepare the ground for future learning in psychology. Emphasis throughout will be placed on the relevance of psychological theories and concepts to working in the area of Community Development and Youth Work.

Introduction to Psychology

In this section learners will be introduced to the discipline of psychology and the history to psychology. Learners will briefly explore a selection of contemporary theories/perspectives (Behaviourist approach, Psychodynamic approach, Humanistic approach and Biological approach). The scientific method in psychology-Steps in empirical research and ethics in psychological research.

Physiological psychology (i.e. biopsychology)

Physiological Psychology (i.e. Biopsychology) Learners will explore how the brain and nervous system influence human behaviour- Brain structures, consciousness and body rhythms (e.g. sleep cycles, dreaming, theories of consciousness) The endocrine system and homeostatic control.

Cognition

This section will introduce learners to the concept of cognition and cognitive processes including attention (e.g. selective attention, sustained attention), thinking and problem solving (e.g. creativity, concept formation),perception (e.g. theories, models, visual illusions) ,memory (e.g. models of memory, imagery, forgetting/remembering) and language. Understanding an individual’s cognitive capacity in order to facilitate their engagement and to build relationships.

Motivation, Emotion and Stress

Learners will gain insight into theories of emotion, theories of motivation and models of stress. Individual differences involved in stress (e.g. personality, cultural, gender). Strategies to manage and reduce stress, and to promote positive behaviour in community development and youth work.

Current debates in psychology

Learners will be introduced to debates in psychology- Freewill versus determinism debate, nature versus nurture debate and the reductionism debate.
