Introduction to Research Methods

This module aims to provide the learner with an introduction and overview of qualitative and quantitative research methods relevant to the role of a Social Care Worker. Learners will be introduced to key components of research, different approaches to conducting research and the relationship between research, theory and practice. This module will also foster an approach to research methodology and ethics that is related to social care. In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.

Introduction to Research

The role of research in social care, theoretical foundations of research, components of research, overview of qualitative and quantitative methodologies (questionnaires, interviews, focus groups) mixed methods and the qualitative and quantitative divide, assessing the value of research to social care practice.

Research Process and Design

Stages of the research process, formulating a research question, carrying out a literature review for a research proposal, academic integrity and avoiding plagiarism

Data Analysis & Statistics

Validity & reliability in qualitative and quantitative data: concepts and levels of measurement. Introduction to data analysis – data preparation: exploration, analysis, preparation and validation. Basic applications for inputting and analysing qualitative and quantitative data: Introduction to statistics for research, interpreting statistics and the use of statistical analysis. Reporting and communication of results.

Ethics and Marginalised Groups in Social Research

Ethical considerations (principle of informed consent, confidentiality, sensitive issues), conducting ethical research, research with vulnerable or at risk groups: Making links between the importance of ethical practice and ethical research.

Producing a Research Proposal

The research proposal process, planning your work, structure of proposals, writing, design and methodology, ethical considerations for writing, referencing style, guidelines on presentation of report.
