Managing Relationships in Social Care

This module will introduce students to some of the key relationships of a social care worker. They will explore the role of relationship building and reflect on their personal process of relationship building. The role of building professional relationships, both with clients and other professionals will be explored. This will include the importance of relationship in understanding behaviours that challenge. The content of the module will be updated on an ongoing basis to reflect new learning and development in this area. A minimum of 75% attendance is required for this module.In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.

Relationship Building and theories of Relationships

Reflecting on past experiences of relationship building, identifying strengths and weaknesses. Recognising the difference between personal and professional relationships. Exploring Attachment theory and Resilience theory in relationships

Professional Relationships

Professional relationships and asking for help. Building interpersonal skills to support the development of professional relationships. Language, tone of voice, body language etc...-10% Interdisciplinary Relationships

Interdisciplinary Relationships

Identify the professionals that are part of an interdisciplinary process and gain an understanding of their roles. This will include, nurses, public health nurses, psychologists, social workers, schools etc...

Ethics in Social Care Work

Exploring professional and ethical boundaries in social care practice

Challenging Behaviour

What is challenging behaviour and the role the relationships plays in supporting those who exhibit behaviours that challenge. Behaviour as a form of communication will be discussed. The autonomy and agency of the client will also be examined. Some ideas around self care in this context will be explored

Conflict in Relationships

Exploring conflict styles and their impact on relationships. reflecting on how communication skills can influence conflict resolution. Examining some conflict resolution strategies including Restorative Practice.
