Professional Practice 3

This module will prepare students for Placement 2 through reflecting on previous placement experience and identifying future learning and development. Students will continue to build skills around linking theory to practice, drawing on key theoretical frameworks from other modules and linking these to their practice experience. Students will build on their understanding of assessment and evaluation and will examine working relationships with service users. As social care work is dynamic and evolving, the syllabus content will be expanded or modified to reflect practice developments. A minimum of 75% attendance is required for this module.In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.

Preparation for placement

Reflecting on previous placement experience. Identifying learning goals for placement 2. Professional conduct while on placement in line with CORU Code of Conduct & Ethics. Communication, boundaries, power and authority, limitations of practice. Supervision and self-care.

Application of theory to practice

Understand and apply key theoretical knowledge and approaches to practice, drawing on psychology, sociology and social work disciplines. Oppression, intersectionality and anti-oppressive practice. Suicide awareness and intervention. Attachment, resilience.

Assessment and intervention

Professional skills for assessment. Engagement, collaboration and safeguarding. Power, authority and confidentiality within working relationships. Introduction to assessments with children and families. Using assessment frameworks and tools. The Hardiker model. Risk assessment and safeguarding. Writing assessment reports. Planning interventions and carrying out evaluation.
