Professional Practice 2

This module will support students to reflect on previous placement experience and identify personal and professional learning. In addition, students will draw on key theoretical frameworks, and build skills around assessment, linking theory to practice and working within the parameters of evidence informed practice. As social care work is dynamic and evolving, the syllabus content will be expanded or modified to reflect practice developments. A minimum of 75% attendance is required for this module.In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.

Practice placement and “the self”

Reflecting on placement, self-awareness, personal and professional learning, Using reflective practice models. Relationships within the social care setting. Communication, boundaries, power and authority, limitations of practice. Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics. Supervision and self-care. Models of supervision

Application of theory to practice

Understand and apply key theoretical knowledge and approaches to practice, drawing on psychology, sociology and social work disciplines. Ecological systems theory, participation and participatory practice, strengths based practice. Supporting advocacy, autonomy, capacity and decision making.

Assessment and intervention

Evidence informed practice, using the Collingwood Three Stage Theory Framework. Assessing needs and domains of assessment. Consent, confidentiality, person-centered care and care planning. Building on strengths and identifying challenges. Risk assessment and safeguarding. Intervention and evaluation. Person centered planning for disability services and care of the older person.
