The aims of this module are to prepare students for professional social care work, to promote the self-development of the student’s personal awareness and critiquing skills which will assist reflective practice. In addition, it will develop skills around linking theory to practice, drawing on key theoretical frameworks from other modules and linking these to their experience while on placement. Students are required to have 75% attendance in this module and pass both components of the assessment in this module to engage in Practicum 1.As professional practice in social care is an ongoing and dynamic subject the syllabus content will be expanded or modified as the case may be, to reflect developments in social care knowledge and practice set out in this module.In order to progress, allcomponents of module assessment must be passed by students – failure tosuccessfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.
The Purpose of Professional Practice
Examine the purpose of undertaking a professional practice, develop key skills in sourcing and applying for a placement, identify learning goals and understand and experience writing a portfolio
Examining Professional and Personal Development
Understand development from reflecting on the self, boundaries, communication, relationships, working in partnership, responsibility and accountability, supervision, self-awareness and self-care. Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics
Application of Theory to Practice
Know, understand and apply key concepts in relation to knowledge and theoretical approaches to life span development, risk assessment, sociology, child and vulnerable person policy, communication, law, disability and managing relationships, loss and grief. The Collingwood Three-Stage Framework.
Examining Interventions
Explore and understand what is meant by an intervention; the different types of interventions and application to meeting client needs
