Working with people across the lifespan

The purpose of this module is to introduce students working with people across the lifespan - children, young people, families and older people. Students will examine key theories of working with people across the lifespan and develop an understanding of the aging process from a social, psychological and physical perspective. A minimum of 75% attendance is required for this module.In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.

Child Protection and Child Welfare

The child protection and Welfare system in Ireland, Models of assessment i.e Hardikar model and Meitheal Model. Child abuse enquirers, Case conferences - The role of case conferences in Child protection. The role of Guardian of Litem. Safe Guarding statements. Risk factors and protective factors to be aware of when working with children. The role of the social care worker in hearing the voice of the child.

Working with older people across the lifespan

Ageism and the aging process, Caring for older people with Dementia, HIQA standards for residential care settings for older people, Signs & Symptoms of Elder abuse. Inter generational work with older people, Social integration, Autonomy and independence, Supports for older people such as Reminiscent therapy, Music therapy and Art therapy

Grief and Loss across the lifespan

Theories on grief and Loss, Gibbs reflective cycle, Kubler Ross cycle of grief, Ambiguous grief, Understanding the tasks of mourning, Creative methods used in social care practice when supporting children and adults who have experienced loss or grief. Support options for those experiencing grief & loss across the lifespan
