This module introduces the student to the basic principles and laws of Mechanics, Properties of Matter and Heat. This will allow the student use and work safely with physics equipment including mass meters timers, pressure guages, temperature controllers
LECTURE CONTENT: Mechanics
Measurement; S.I. units. Mass, volume, density. Velocity; acceleration; force; gravity. Work; energy; power; efficiency; energy conversions.
Properties of Matter
Pressure in a fluid; atmospheric pressure; absolute and gauge pressure; the barometer; pressure gauges; units for measuring pressure. Safety with gas cylinders.Surface tension, wetability, detergents.
Heat
Temperature and thermometer types; temperature scales.Thermal expansion; the thermostat. Calorimetry; heat capacity and latent heat. Methods of heat transfer: conduction, convection and radiation.Vapour pressure and evaporation. The autoclave.Relative humidity.
PRACTICAL CONTENT:
Measuring instruments and density determinations. Relationship between temperature and pressure of a gas. Latent Heat of Fusion of Ice and Vaporisation of Water. Investigation of Thermal Radiation.
