The aim of this module is to provide the student with structured learning opportunities leading to the development of a foundation level knowledge skill and competence in the major structures and physiological functions of the human body upon which the student can build their skill sets in subsequent semesters. This will be achieved through direct learning through lectures and assignments. Theoretical aspects of this module are underpinned by computer and video simulations of the body’s physiological systems.
The Scope of Physiology
An introduction to the basic principles of physiology and a view of the scope of life.
The Cell
An introduction to the basic structure of animal cells. The component parts of the animal cells and their roles in cell structure and function. The Structure and Function of the Cell Membrane. The importance of the cell membrane in message transmission and fluid transport.
The Genetic Basis of Life
An introduction to human genetics. DNA structure and function. Genetic conditions and abnormalities. Genetic Diversity.
Muscles and Exercise
Structure and functional anatomy of muscle. Fuel for exercising muscle. Neural control of muscular activity. Energy expenditure and fatigue.
Cardiovascular and Respiratory Function
The cardiovascular system and its control, the respiratory system and its regulations. Cardiorespiratory responses to physical activity and acute exercise.
Hormones and Exercise
Endocrine system organization. Function of endocrine glands. Exocrine glands. Types of hormones. Hormone actions and control.
Methods used to achieve the module learning outcomes will include lectures, tutorials, laboratory practicals, interpretation of data, case studies, problem-solving exercises, video presentations, self-directed learning and computer-based learning.
