Unit A: Contemporary Music Ensemble
This unit is run as a joint ensemble with Contemporary Music Ensemble 1 in Stage 3 and provides practical experience in the performance of contemporary music.
Unit B: Technology-Based Composition
In this unit students develop skills and knowledge to compose music based on a creative use of electric/electronic/computer technology in the style of instrument and tape music and/or electroacoustic music.

Unit B: Technology-Based Composition
In the lectures, students gains knowledge about:
- Ideas and styles of technology aided/supported composition.
- Methodology of technology-based composition.
- Creative use of electric/electronic/computer technologies in the context of composition
In the workshops, students:
- Discuss and improve concepts of composition in collaboration with the tutor and classmates.
- Realise technology enhanced composition.
The lecturer may provide tuition in student-selected technologies in terms of realisation.
Unit A: Contemporary Music Ensemble
Takes place via weekly 2-hour rehearsals in weeks 1-11, and a public concert in week 12. Works will be chosen from the following categories: existing works for the specific instrumentation/works newly composed by composition students for the specific instrumentation/works for open (indeterminate) instrumentation. Students will be assessed on their performance in the end-of-semester concert.
Unit B: Technology-Based Composition
This unit is taught through lectures and workshops. The lectures equip the students with knowledge about major styles, ideas and technologies of compositions supported/aided/driven by technology. In the workshops, there are two stages of activity. The first is to establish concepts of his/her composition through group discussion and supervision. The second is to identify the necessary resources to create and/or perform the composition.
