The aim of this module is to introduce students to a range of theoretical perspectives that underpin and inform music education practice.
Unit A: Psychology of Music and Music Education
This unit introduces students to theoretical studies and research in the field of psychology of music and music education. Students are given a broad overview of psychological theories of relevance for instrumental/vocal teaching and learning, and there is an emphasis on demonstrating how such theories can be applied in their professional roles as music educators and performers.
Unit B: Philosophical and Sociological Perspectives
This unit explores the philosophical and sociological processes that underpin music education theory and practice. Students will engage in exploring and establishing foundational values, ideas, philosophies and professional dispositions and roles. The unit is based on the premise that music and music education are embodied and culturally-embedded practices.

This module is taught through a blend of lectures and seminars. Students will be expected to engage in reading throughout the semester and be able to reflect on, critique and report on reading within the lectures./seminars for both units.
