Audio Engineering Skills

The skills needed to capture a great recording are essential to any music producer or creative musician. This module will explore the fundamental principles of multi- track recording techniques covering aspects such as audio quality and microphone technique. Understanding the technical constraints imposed by a recording system can allow students to achieve the maximum results from the system.

In addition, students taking this module will have the opportunity to develop the collaborative working skills necessary for the successful industry practitioner, through engagement with recording projects with other students within the BIMM Community, as part of the learning and assessment process.

The module will be delivered in the onsite recording studio in a combined workshop/lecture format.  A range of teaching methods will be utilised to include, but not limited to, lectures and practical workshops, support by content available through the CANVAS Virtual Learning Environment [VLE]. Technical concepts and professional practices will be considered through formal lectures with audio visual support, tutor demonstrations, in-class practical tasks and assignments. Tutor and student led discussion, supported by independent study and group research, will provide a platform for exploring key concepts. Classes will be delivered by expert tutors, enhanced at strategic points in the academic calendar by guest lectures, co-delivered by expert industry practitioners where appropriate, offering students a beneficial insight into real-world application of module content. Students will have to opportunity to both give and receive critical peer feedback to enhance their  learning experience collaboratively.

 

The virtual learning environment (VLE) will act as a central hub where students can access course content, receive and offer peer feedback on their work, review class work through quizzes, and stay informed of important news related to the module.

 

Individual tutorials, available to all students, form an integral part of the module enabling focussed teaching and learning around key topics.
