Management and Supervision in Social Care

This module will introduce the concept and functions of management for social care practice. It will equip students with the personal skills and understanding necessary to define the roles and demonstrate the duties of successful front line managers within the social care setting. There will be an opportunity to explore the principles and importance of quality assurance frameworks and supervision across social care practice. As management and supervision are an ongoing and dynamic subject, the syllabus content will be expanded or modified, as the case may be, to reflect developments within social care management and supervision.In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.

Theories of Management and Leadership

Scientific Theory, Administrative Theory, Bureaucratic Theory, Human Relations Theory Systems Theory, Contingency Theories, Style Theory. Identify the skills, characteristics and responsibilities to be a successful manager/leader.

The Functions of Management

Planning, Organising, Staffing Leading, Controlling.

Quality Assurance, Improvement and Risk management.

Quality assurance frameworks in human services, principles of quality assurance frameworks, HIQA, National Standards Authority and CORU. Maximising knowledge about risk and at risk behaviours and choices. Developing alternative strategies. Risk assessment process.

Managing and Communicating

Role of the management team. Communication in management, analysing communication situations within and between teams. Leading, persuading, motivating and supporting. Using power to influence change. The extent of the management brief at varying levels. Team work creating and maintaining an effective team.

Supervision in social care practice.

Tasks and roles within supervision. Functions of supervision. Reviewing past performance. Setting goals and targets.
