This module will provide an introduction to what is referred to by many as the golden era of European cinema. The module will address the theoretical, cultural and aesthetic aspects of European cinema during this period. It will examine key concepts such as authorship, art cinema, the relationship between European cinema and Hollywood, the emergence of film theory in Europe, cinema as an expression of artistic freedom, cinema and national identity.
