This module examines the fundamentals and techniques of creative writing. It is designed to provide an introductory and critical foundation for students in the first year of the programme in order to familiarise them with the process and discipline of writing creatively. Through seminar discussions, workshops and a series of class-based practical exercises, students are initially introduced to the basic elements of storytelling; including theme, structure, plot, characterisation, dialogue, conflict, character perspective and setting, with a particular emphasis on the dramatic short story. The module further emphasises the importance of effective process, writing to a brief and theme as well as the concepts of reflexivity and positionality.
