The purpose of this module is to facilitate the student in becoming competent in laboratory procedures relating to other modules studied in semester 5. Students will also learn how to research a scientific topic and write a literature review.
Analytical Techniques 1 labs
Gas chromatography analysis of biological samples, HPLC method develeopment and quantitative analysis of pharmaceutical compounds, Spectroscopic techniques to identify and quantify metals in biological samples.
Medical Microbiology labs
Indicative content includes: Isolation, identification and characterisation of common infectious microorganisms from the body; determination of antimicrobial resistance of microorgansisms; use of immunological techniques in the diagnosis of disease.
Pharmaceutical biotechnology labs
DNA Cloning, Protein Purification, Protein characterisation,
Student Literature survey
Students will choose a topic from an approved list and will carry out a review of published literature (journal articles and textbooks) on the subject. They will then prepare a written document on their chosen topic.
