Module Overview

Creative Group Work & Facilitation Skills.

To provide students with an understanding of the use of creative group work in social care. The students will incorporate the fundamental principles of group work and group dynamics. The student will reflect on their facilitation skills through experiential learning. A minimum of 75% attendance is required for this module. In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.

Definition of Groups.

The student will explore different definitions of group work in social care and the use of group work in different social care settings. The student will learn about evidence informed practice using group work programs in social care settings. The student will engage in knowing, understanding and applying the key concepts that are relevant to group work.

The fundamental principles of group work.

Incorporating in the fundamental principles of using group work skills in social care practice to expose students to theories, skills and roles. The student will demonstrate skills in evidence informed practice, including an understanding of the theoretical framework underpinning group work in social care practice.

Facilitation Skills

Develop facilitation and co facilitation skills in the social care setting. The students will be aware of the role of different facilitation techniques to improve outcomes and enhance the participation of service users in a social care setting. To critically reflect on personal and peer co-facilitation skills.

To work creatively with groups.

To develop a creative tool kit whereby the student will engage in experiential learning. The student will be able to evaluate and critically reflect on their own professional practice to identify learning and development needs Partaking in group work activities is also an opportunity for students to select appropriate learning activities to achieve professional development goals and to be able to integrate new knowledge and skills into professional practice. Evaluate intervention plans using appropriate tools.

Group Dynamics in Social Care Practice

Principles and dynamics of group work in a range of settings will be explored. Group dynamics will also be incorporated into key learning outcomes and the student will reflect on their own dynamics within the experiential group and college learning environment.The student will explore different roles that they engage in when partaking in group work including the importance of teamwork, authority power and influence. The student will explore transference and countertransference. The student will evaluate how social groups develop, will explore relevant social identity theories and the links to social care practice.
