This module will examine and explore the characteristics of good game design from a storytelling perspective – story and world design, character development and crafting player-focused narrative elements. It will encourage the students to consider the cultural and social perspectives that game stories exist within while also exploring media texts as tools for innovative game design concepts.
Visual Story Techniques
Students engage with and discover the visual symbols and indicators that reveal story through the visual image
Story Structure
Students learn the basic story structure based on Aristotle's Poetics. The explore this structure and it's creative possibities
Creative work
Students explore the possibilities of creative engagement using prescribed learning techniques employed both individually and in group work
Creative work
Students examine popular culture in order to develop opinions and understanding of their own cultural tastes and also to appreciate others
Character
Students learn the real meaning of character in creative work in their writing and designing of story. Explore basic character traits.
Dialogue
Using personality characteristics and traits for writing good dialogue, students investigate constructing simple yet suitable dialogue sentences for specific situations in scene writing
Field trip
Students visit and tour Dublin Zoo. They learn the various habits and behaviour of the animals. The focus of this work is to help them align certain traits with humans in order to look at human behaviour in creative character development
Lecture
Tutorial - students perform written tasks and exercises both individually and in group based on lecture topics
