This module addresses the fundamental concepts of Physics.
The aim of this module is familiarise the student with the physical world as it relates to civil and building engineering. Stress is laid on practical “real life” applications of scientific principles.

Heat and Temperature
• Temperature scales, Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin
• Thermal expansion, linear, areal, volumetric. Gas laws, introduction kinetic theory. Calorific value, specific heat capacity, latent heat capacity Heat transfer, conduction, convection, radiation
Electricity and Magnetism
• Electricity, current, potential difference, resistance, Ohms Law, resistivity, cells, batteries, electrical energy, power, fuses, magnetism, bar magnets, earth’s magnetic field, electromagnets, right hand rule, left hand rule, moving coil meter, digital meters, D..C. motor, Faradays Law of electromagnetic induction, Lenzs Law, transformer, generator, D.C., A.C.
Laboratory & Tutorial Work:
• Undertake laboratory experiments in relation to physical properties of materials such as (Density, Linear expansion, Hookes Law)
