To enable the student to appreciate the range of disabilities that exist. To familiarise the student with the supports available to those with specific needs. In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.
Models of Disability
Explore particular models of disability, with specific reference to the medical, social and human rights approaches to understanding disability.
A Historical Perspective
Provide an overview of the main forms of disability, contextualised within a brief history of how disability has been understood over time.
Personal Awareness and Professional Development
Provide opportunities for students to question and develop their own understanding of disability with a particular emphasis on current best practice in social care contexts. Person centered planning
National and International legal developments.
Introduce the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006) and the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act, and chart National legislative changes designed to support its implementation in Ireland. Safeguarding and relevant policies and procedures
Barriers to Full Participation
Identify barriers to disabled peoples opportunities to achieve equality in areas such as education, independent living and access to service users.
