Equality, Cultural Diversity and Intercultural competencies

The aim of this module is to develop students’ awareness and understanding of issues facing individuals and groups from diverse cultural backgrounds in contemporary Ireland. Students will develop an understanding of cultural and ethnic diversity in Irish context, critically reflect on policies in this area and understand and be able to analyse the role of language in society. Students will reflect on their own ethnic heritage, history, cultural identity, values. In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.

Historical development of migration and cultural diversity in Ireland

Historical overview on migration and emigration. Current trends. Relevant legislations and policies. Human trafficking and slavery

Intercultural competencies

Stereotypes and prejudice. Verbal and non-verbal communication, ESOL and the role of language and bilingualism. Cultural distance. Culture shock. Family and gender norms, religious believes. Cross-cultural adaptation theory. Cultural intelligence

Equality and Human Rights

The concept of equality in Irish legislation, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Anti-oppressive practice

Integration and diversity in social care setting

Diverse workforce and management. Care for older migrants from divers ethnical and cultural background. Care for young people from diverse ethnical and cultural background. Cultural mediation.
