Communicating for Social Care

To explore communication from a professional perspective. This will include formal and informal communication strategies. The student will be introduced to some alternative ways of communicating including Lamh and PECS. The importance of active listening in social care settings will be explored. Opportunity to practice key skills, including formal email and active listening will be explored.Communicating in social care is a dynamic subject. The content of the module will be updated on an ongoing basis to reflect new learning and development in this area. A minimum of 75% attendance is required for this module. In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.

Communicating effectively with service users

Explore the use of verbal, non-verbal skills, body language, tone in communicating with service users. Identify creative attitude and ability to find solutions to any barriers that inhibit communication with clients. Demonstrates an appropriate level of confidence in approaching clients to establish rapport. Explore methods of communication such as Laimh, PECS etc to aid communication.

Identify methods of communication

The student will participate in developing clear, accurate and objective social care documentation both written and formal. The student will examine reports within the social care field and evaluate these. The student will explore appropriate digital and technological skills ability for social care practice and the impact of social media and online communication.

Workplace communication that is understood by the service user

The student will explore ways to communicate the basic aspects of care and assessment with the service users in the service.The student will identify methods of developing rapport and sensitivity for such communication with the service users. Respecting the rights and dignity, participation, culture and language of the service user will be examined. The students will understand and see service users as active participants in their own care and support them to communicate their views.

Communication skills to enable building professional relationships.

To be relational led in social care practice with in an array of relationship parameters understanding the complexities of culture and language. Demonstrates a willingness to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and as part of a broader care plan for service users. Demonstrates an openness to maintain collegiality in attitude and action to deliver good practice. Examine ways to express informed opinions and use appropriate professional terminology within a social care setting.

Reflective writing

Students will explore the role of reflection in communicating. There will be a focus on reflective writing. This will include the use of reflective frameworks in social care work.
