Counselling Skills in a Social Care Setting

This module aims to provide the learner with an introduction to basic counselling skills. The learners will be provided with a theoretical background in counselling and the structures and organisational systems in Ireland. The learners will develop basic counselling skills and intervention skills that can be utilised within a Social Care Setting. Students will also examine different therapeutic communities and creative therapies. As counselling is an ongoing and dynamic subject, the syllabus content will be expanded or modified, as the case may be, to reflect developments within counselling.In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.

Counselling Skills in Social Care Practice.

Attending and listening; paraphrasing/reflections; use of questions and probes, helping clients explore feelings, coping with silences and blocks, coping with resistance. Brief Solution Focused Approaches.

Boundaries, Ethics and the Self-Image

Boundaries and creating a ‘safe environment’, Ethical issues in counselling, Confidentiality. Knowing your limits as a social care worker. Programmes to develop a healthy, positive and realistic self-image. Self-care, stress and compassionate fatigue.
