Community Studies

The purpose of this module is to explore the question What is community. Theoretical perspectives on community will be discussed and critiqued. Different types of communities will be analysed and evaluated, including online communities. The role of community development and the impact on communities will be addressed. The role of community in challenging poverty, disadvantage and inequality will be examined drawing on theoretical concepts and frameworks.The content of the module will be updated on an ongoing basis to reflect new learning and development in this area. In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.

Definitions and concepts of community

What are communities? Who lives in them? Rural and urban communities, Community integration v/s isolation/marginalisation, Cultural integration versus acceptance. Community supports and resources, Social policy and community. Explore online communities and their impact on other communities.

Principles of community development

Key principles, values and approaches to community development.Research, development, delivery and evaluation of community projects. Networking and relationship building with individuals and groups within the community. Dealing with planning authorities. Conflict resolution.

Community education

Exploring the influence of Paulo Freire on concepts of community and education. Exploring the role of community education and informal education in building communities. Some history of adult education and current challenges will also be discussed and evaluated. Barriers to success and funding.

Impact of community projects on communities

Exploring disadvantage, poverty and inequality. Finding and evaluating data including CSO and Pobal maps. Role of the community development worker. Examples of successful community development initiatives.
