Supporting children and families in Social Care

This module will introduce students to the theories and principles underpinning family support work. Students will develop an understanding of best practice approaches within family support work and will develop skills to work collaboratively with children and families. Social care work is dynamic and evolving and the syllabus content may be modified or adapted to include practice developments.In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.

Theoretical frameworks and family support work

Relevant theoretical frameworks including Attachment theory, Resilience theory, Bio-ecological Systems theory, Family Systems theory, Family Life Cycle, Family Stress Model. Trauma and family relationships.

What works in family support?

Legislation and policies. Practice principles of family support including prevention & early intervention, working in partnership, social support and strengths based practice. Cultural sensitivity and cultural humility in working with families. Supporting parents and parental capacity. 50 key messages; evidence based statements to support parents in their parenting role. Hardiker model. Practice frameworks, including Meitheal and Signs of Safety. Marte Meo, filial therapy and Non-violent Resistance approach

Safeguarding children and young people

Legislation and guidelines governing child protection. Principles of best practice in child protection and welfare. Four categories of child abuse. Indicators of abuse. Recognising and responding to concerns. Intimate partner violence and impact on children. Intra-professional and interagency working to keep children safe.

Working therapeutically with children and families

Building meaningful relationships with children and families. Whole family assessment. The assessment wheel. 'Three Concurrent Activities'; safeguarding, collaboration and engagement. Working creatively with children and families. Trauma informed approaches to practice. Using genograms, timelines, ecomapping. Self care, supervision and compassionate fatigue.
