Module Overview

Childhood Growth & Development

This module will introduce students to how children develop throughout childhood and into adolescence. Physical, social, emotional and cognitive development will be explored and students will be encouraged to think critically about these key areas. Students will also reflect on the role of nature versus nurture in relation to childhood growth and development.In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.

Foundations of development & physical development in childhood

Patterns of genetic inheritance, chromosomal abnormality and prenatal development. Physical and motor development, development of the brain and nervous system, perceptual development, developmental milestones.

Social and Emotional Development in childhood:

Attachment, separation and deprivation . Temperament, parenting styles and goodness to fit. Development of self and morality. Gender roles and gender identity. Impact of family, school and peer relationships

Cognitive Development in childhood

Cognitive theories of development, including Piaget, Vygotsky and Bruner. Language development and theories of language acquisition. Information Processing Approach

Adolescence

Physical, social and emotional changes in adolescence. The influence of peers and parents. Psycho-social Development and a ‘crisis of identity’.
