Chemical Science

The aim of this module is to develop the student’s knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry including knowledge and understanding of the different types of matter by state and chemical type; Knowledge and understanding of the formulae of compounds formed by various combinations of elements and type of bonding involved; Knowledge and understanding of balancing equations for simple reactions and classification of reactions; Demonstrate knowledge of the main organic functional groups and the identification of organic compounds such as alkanes, cycloalkanes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, halogen compounds, carboxylic acids and esters amino acids, peptides, proteins, carbohydrates, fats and fatty acids.

Introduction:

Quantities and units in chemistry: SI units.

Atomic Structure:

Element: metals/non-metals; atomic and mass number, mass unit; isotopes; anions and cations. Properties and covalency of Carbon

Compounds and their Formation:

ionic / covalent; molecular and empirical formulae; typical chemistry of metals / non-metals; common polyatomic ions; types of reactions: addition, decomposition, acid-base, redox

Stoichiometry

Formulae/elemental composition; equations: balancing; the mole; concentration; molarity; yield

Chemical Reactions:

Definitions; oxidation/reduction and combustion reactions.

Electronic Configurations:

Quantum numbers: orbitals: rules: valence shell, octet rule: simple Lewis structures

Periodic Table:

Ionisation energy: electron affinity: electronegativity: polar covalent compounds: lengths / strengths of bonds; hydrogen bonding.

Thermochemistry:

Specific heat capacity: calorimetry: endo / exothermic reactions; enthalpy: Hess’s Law

Equilibrium:

Equilibrium constant Le Chateliers principle: acid dissociation; pH / buffers

Introduction to Organic Chemistry:

Bonding, nomenclature and properties of: alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketons, carboxylic acids, esters, amino acids, peptides, proteins, carbohydrates, fats and fatty acids.

Methods used to achieve the module learning outcomes will include lectures, tutorials, laboratory practicals, interpretation of data, case studies, problem-solving exercises, video presentations, self-directed learning and computer-based learning
