The aim of this module is to provide the student with a good grounding in pharmaceutical analysis and solid state analysis. This includes a review of pharmocopoeial techniques, analysis of dosage, as well as analysis of solid state materials relevant to forensic chemistry, including soils and paints. The module incorporates a significant amount of experimental techniques as applied to these analytes.
Pharmaceutical Analysis:
Review of USP, Ph.Eur, BP monographs system and pharmacopoeial analysis techniques
Applications of pharmacopoeial methods to dosage forms and delivery systems
Introduction to pharmaceutical dosage forms and delivery systems including: solid dosage forms, solutions, semi-solids, parenterals, aerosols, sustained delivery systems
Particle size theory and analysis
Pharmaceutical analysis methods for oral solid dosage forms including: thickness, hardness, friability, content uniformity, weight variation, disintegration, dissolution
Applications of instrumental techniques to pharmaceutical analysis
Solid State Analysis
Thermal Analysis: Introduction to thermal processes and thermal events. Thermogravimetric analysis. Differential Thermal Analysis and Differential Scanning Calorimetry. Evolved gas analysis.
Surface Techniques: Scanning and Transmission electron microscopy. X-Ray Fluorescence analysis. Atomic Force and Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy Instrumentation.
Use of Raman, IR and NIR for chemical analysis, instrumentation, methodology.
Application of techniques to soils, paints and polymeric materials
Laboratory Work:
Two advanced practical classes which complement the lecture material. Details are in the School of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Laboratory Manual
