Module Overview

Organic Chemistry and Spectroscopy

This module is at intermediate level and builds on the first year introductory programme.  It provides students with the opportunity to expand their knowledge of the reactions of common organic functional groups and their associated mechanisms.  The applications of the reactions of these functional groups to students’ specialist fields will be emphasised where possible.  Students will be introduced to the use of UV/vis, IR and proton and carbon NMR spectroscopy for the purposes of elucidating the structure of simple organic compounds.

The main aim of the practical element of the module is to allow students to develop new the skills and techniques required for the synthesis and characterisation of organic compounds, while supporting and reinforcing the concepts discussed in the lectures.  It will build upon the practical knowledge gained by the student in the first year programme.

Functional Group Chemistry: The chemistry of the alkenes, alkynes, amines and alcohols under the headings nomenclature, preparation, physical properties, chemical properties and applications. The redox relationship between aldehydes and ketones.   Nomenclature, physical properties and preparation of carboxylic acids and carboxylic acid derivatives.

Spectroscopy: An introduction to UV/vis, IR and proton (equivalence of protons, chemical shift and integration) and carbon (chemical shift, decoupling, DEPT) NMR spectroscopy. Basic principles of each technique, sample preparation and a general approach to problem solving. Application of UV/vis, IR and proton and carbon NMR spectroscopy to structure elucidation of organic compounds.

Laboratory component: 5 x 3 hour laboratory / workshop sessions.  Laboratory work is sourced from the School of Chemical and BioPharmaceutical Sciences Laboratory Manuals.

Students will learn through lectures (20 hours), problem solving (4 hours), laboratory practicals and workshops (15 hours) and self directed learning (61 hours).
