Materials, Bio-structures and Spectroscopy A

This modules builds on the basic concepts, theoretical and experimental, delivered in CHEM 2005. This module expands to cover modern topics including the syntheses of inorganic materials, nanoscience and metals in biology. In addition, an overview of the pertinent experimental spectroscopic techniques and characterisation methods that can be used in the elucidation of structure and composition of inorganics is presented.

A selection of the following topics or part thereof will be covered each year:


Preparation of Inorganic Materials
Synthesis of Inorganic solids: direct reactions and precursor methods. Solid solutions, phase diagrams. Investigation of a selection of preparation techniques such as the synthesis of superconductors and zeolites.


Inorganic Nanomaterials
Classification of Materials. Examine the property of materials with respect to the newer materials based on the nanoscale. Practical applications of newer materials in use today. Carbon based materials: preparation and application. Nanoparticles: preparation methods and applications.

Metals in Biology an Introduction.
Roles of metals in biology, metal binding sites in proteins, dielectric constants, entatic states. Sodium potassium pump. Non-metals in biology: role of nitrogen monoxide, phosphates. Role of silicones in medical devices and personal care products.
Inorganic Spectroscopic And Characterisation Techniques
Electronic Spectroscopy (UV/Vis & Fluorescence), Vibrational Spectroscopy (IR and Raman), Mass Spectrometry (MS), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Circular Dichroism (CD) and Elemental Analysis.

Practical Inorganic Chemistry

Five three hour laboratory sessions will be completed.
Laboratory work is sourced from the School of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Laboratory manual.

The module is delivered through a series of lectures (20 hours), tutorials (4 hours), laboratory practical classes (15 hours) and self-directed study (61 hours).
