Module Overview

Business Research Methods

The module is designed to facilitate students in understanding Business Research Methods, enabling them to commence independent research. The module helps students develop their ideas for research projects, propose a research project relevant to their field, outline an appropriate research aim and a series of objectives for that project, embark on a research process, engaging with the literature, evaluating and selecting appropriate methodologies and methods, gathering and analysing data, and developing sound rigorous conclusions.

This module:

- helps the student comprehend and apply sound decision-making around the research process;

- gives the student a systematic understanding of the different forms of research that may be undertaken;

- enables the student to develop critical evaluation skills and apply these skills to identify research opportunities based on gaps in theory and/or practice; and

- assists the students in developing self-efficacy and confidence as researchers at level 9.

The Business Research Methods Module is a mandatory requirement for the award of a Masters at Level 9 NQAI.

This is a common module and classes take place in a mixed programmatic environment twice per week. Students from both Level 9 and Level 10 undertake the taught elements of this module. This module is open to business research students from any campus in TU Dublin at level 9 and 10.

. Developing research skills

Students will be able to critically evaluate the importance and relevance of their own decisions during the research process. The student will have gained skills necessary to satisfactorily complete a full Research Proposal/Commencement Document in relation to the specific Research Project/Report. These skills will also allow the student to continue a self-directed process to complete their own primary research, in line with MBS Stream requirements, through to the submission of final reports i.e. Dissertation, Company Project (group or individual), Business Plan or Research Article.

The method of instruction is designed to ensure and support each student so that each will be in a position to select a research topic, choose a research paradigm and progress to a final Dissertation

Blended Learning/Technology: All supporting literature and materials will be made available online. The use of online, interactive pedagogical tools is mandatory and used in assessments. The use of online library facilities forms a significant part of computer based learning and research. TUD Library provides computer based sessions as a support to this class.

Lectures and Workshops: This course will be delivered through lectures and seminar/workshops. Lectures and workshops from the Business Research Methods Module will feed directly into the assessments that students are expected to subsequently complete. Therefore, attendance is mandatory.

The Role of Class Discussion: Specific workshop/seminars are organised to relate to the research processes being considered by students and are arranged for the basis of class discussion. Class discussion, in itself, is an essential part of this module, and important particularly due to the individually selected research topics. This allows for cross-fertilisation of ideas as well as brainstorming to clarify possible research objectives, strategies and data collection techniques.

Literature: Class discussion will be driven and supported by appropriate academic and trade based literature. This will further facilitate student self-directed and directed learning activity

Formative Assessment: Students will build skills, participate in individual challenges, and develop their knowledge using a range of formative assessments.
