This module will develop and expand the principles of biochemistry introduced in the stage two biochemistry modules. Particular emphasis will be placed on developing an understanding of (a) integration of the metabolic activity between pathways and tissues (b) the role played by key hormones in both lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, and their links to human disease. The material covered in the lectures is reinforced in the laboratory practicals.
Lecture series:
The lecture series will cover the biochemical process and function of selected pathways such as lipid and ketone body synthesis and breakdown, glycogen pathways, gluconeogenesis, pentose phosphate pathway. The major metabolic activities of selected tissues including liver, muscle, adipose tissue and nervous tissue will be reviewed. The metabolic activity of these tissues during obesity, fed/fasting cycle and exercise will be highlighted.
This lecture series will also cover an overview of the endocrine system and hormone synthesis, secretion and transport. It will focus on the mechanism of hormonal control of metabolism including dietary and hormonal regulation of gene expression and the impact on the body.
Laboratory Programme :
The practical series will include but is not limited to;
- Cellular fat uptake and utilisation
- Glucose release from tissues
- Cholesterol
- Lipase in Serum
- Regulation of Gluconeogenesis by Glucagon
Measurement of metabolic activity during starvation
Biochemical pathways
Biochemical processes and control of selected pathways such as lipid and ketone breakdown and biosynthesis, gluconeogenesis and glycogen
Endocrine system
Overview of synthesis and transport. Hormonal control of metabolism
Students will learn through lectures, tutorials and laboratory practicals and workshops.
