This module will introduce the student to the main physiological systems of the body. It will give knowledge of the anatomy, histology and physiology of healthy human organs and organ systems. This will provide the context for the cellular and molecular aspects of the course.
Lectures
Cardiovascular system: Blood composition, role of heart and blood vessels in circulation and gas exchange.
Respiratory system: Anatomy of the thorax. Muscles of respiration. Structures within the respiratory system including histology. Ventilation and gas transport.
Digestive system: Anatomy and histology of the GIT. Role of the Oesophagus, Stomach, Small intestine, Large intestine, Gall bladder, Liver and Pancreas in digestion and absorption of nutrients and metabolism.
Excretory system: Anatomy of the kidney. Role of the kidney and nephron in excretion and formation or urine.
Endocrine system: Role in control of bodily functions and homeostasis. Thyroid and parathyroid glands, Hypothalamus and Pituitary gland, Adrenal gland and Pancreas will be studied.
Nervous system: Introduction to central and peripheral nervous systems. Nervous tissue types. Histology of glial cells. Regions of the brain and their functions.
Practicals
Histological examination of selected tissues, organs and glands.
Practicals will include selected physiology experiments to illustrate concepts learned in lectures and will be selected:
Measurement of blood pressure and heart rate.
Measurement of respiratory volumes and capacities
Urine analysis
This module will be delivered over one semester with a total of 44 contact hours. The module will use a mixture of lectures (24h) and practical laboratory work (20h). Attendance at practicals is mandatory.
