Human Body and Disease

The aim of this introductory module is to familiarise the student with the structure and function of the normal tissues in the body, to introduce some organ systems and to introduce the molecular basis of selected diseases.

Theory

1. Overview of the physiological systems and the role of homeostasis.                                                                  

2. Tissues of body: Epithelium and connective tissues including cartilage and bone- structure, function and classification.

3. Muscle structure and ultrastructure, contraction of skeletal muscle. 

4. Nerve tissue: structure and classification of neurons. Reflexes.

5. Control: Nervous and Endocrine systems.

6. Vascular system: Blood,  blood vessels , haemostasis

7. Integument: structure of the skin and its sensory receptors: roles in perception and thermoregulation.

8. Introduction to biochemistry

9. Categories of disease including infectious, hereditary, acquired genetic, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative and autoimmune.

10. Mechanism of exemplar diseases from the above categories.

 

Laboratory practicals are closely aligned to the theory lectures and will include:

1. Selected physiology experiments to illustrate concepts learned in lectures.

2. Histological examinations of selected organs and tissues.  

3. Preparation and examination of a blood smear.

4. Determination of cholesterol &  glucose levels in blood plasma

 

Lectures, closely aligned laboratory practicals, tutorials, online tools such as quizzes, animation and videos.
