Module Overview

Architectural Design Research Studio

Architectural Design Research module provides students with an opportunity to critically appraise and substantially expand upon a specific body of work (typically a project or portfolio of design work and research generated within the programme or, in the case of advanced-entry students, externally) through continuous self-assessment, peer feedback, and external examination. .

Candidates for this module will actively seek further insight in their chosen field of study through self-directed enquiry under supervision and consider the best means to communicate their research to an appropriate audience. They will familiarize themselves with the discourse in the chosen area of investigation, formulate exploratory research questions and follow a methodological approach deemed appropriate to their investigation. This enquiry will be supported by both research and design modules and elective modules undertaken earlier or concurrently in the MArch programme.

The student will produce a substantial research output from the study, and synthesise it as a Design Research Folio. This Folio will comprise research work on the chosen subject made in an agreed combination of approved media (drawing, image-making, written text, video, prototype, and/or model, for example, as appropriate to the project) and presented for dissemination within and outside the school by means of appropriate vehicles (for example, research dissertation, film, book / book chapter, exhibition, performance, website, public workshops or lectures, conference paper(s) etc.). The study may take the form of research through architecture (architectural design-based research), into architecture (into the history and theory of architecture and its social, economic, political, environmental histories and theories) or for architecture (the supports for architecture, including technology, education, policy etc.), and will be carried out using an appropriate methodology.
