The Architecture and Culture module will make the learner critically aware of pertinent issues and debates at the
intersection between architectural practice and critical theory. The content of the module will be coordinated with
the thematic studio groups operating in Advanced Design Studio (ARCH9003).
The aim of the module is to introduce the student to academic writing at postgraduate level. It also exposes the learner though a
series of readings and seminars to research that situates architectural production within broader contexts of
history, culture, economics, society, technology etc. It offers an opportunity for the learner to reflect on their
position within these contexts and to choose a specific theme of study relevant to that positioning. Through a
series of more focused readings and seminars with other students who have chosen that theme and under the
guidance of a lecturer working at the forefront of explorations within that theme, the learner will develop an
understanding of the theories underpinning a contemporary mode of architectural practice.
