Module Overview

Roles in the Professional Context

This module examines the role of the professional architect from economic, societal, and environmental perspectives and aims to provide students with an understanding of the changing context of the construction and built environment industries and the diverse roles the architect plays within them. The module introduces participants to and range of approaches and skills required to act effectively as agile professionals within the emerging professional context.

The module is designed to enable participants to reflect on their own experiences as architects and to identify actions to be taken to develop key communication, presentation, negotiation, collaboration, management, and leadership skills in order to reach their full professional potential.  Using the method of Gibbs Reflective Cycle (1998) participants will conduct a self-appraisal of their professional capabilities and design their own personal development action plan. Each participant will leave the course with their own personal mission statement, values and action plan to achieve their defined goals.

The module is delivered through a series of workshops designed to create an environment for personal discovery and peer to peer support to address current affairs and future challenges facing the professional architect.
