Module Overview

Advanced Architectural Design Studio

The aim of the Advanced Design Studio module is to provide the learner with an opportunity to explore a mode of architectural practice by working in one of a number of thematic studio groups. The learner will develop a brief and site for an individual architectural design project that aligns with their thematic group. The direction of the project will be supported by an understanding of research methods developed in Research Methods (ARCH9001) and by lectures, readings and seminars aligned to the thematic groups in Architecture and Culture (ARCH9005), and learning from the Collaborative Design Studio (ARCH9000). In the early stages of the semester, the learner will outline a written statement of intent related to their studio project. Each thematic studio group will work under the guidance of a lecturer and a practitioner at the forefront of current explorations within the chosen theme. This module combines self direction with tuition and enables participants to develop an understanding of the potential for design projects to contribute to the wider discipline of architecture through its practice and dissemination.

The output of the module is an architectural design project that is demonstrably an evaluation of ideas that have been identified by the learner in response to initial research carried out within the themes offered by the studio. The module aims to provide the learner with an opportunity to demonstrate the intellectual and practical skills required to synthesize information as an architectural designer while at the same time demonstrating an ethical and reflective awareness as a projective and critical thinker.

The learner is required to develop an appropriate method of working (methodology) for their individual design project which will include the traditional output of drawings and models and other media as appropriate.
