Module Overview

Addiction and Substance Misuse

This module aims to provide the learner with an introduction to addiction and substance misuse. In a combination of lectures, practical workshops and site visits, policy and practice in these key areas will be critically analysed. The learner will be introduced to how history, culture, theory and policy inform and underpin service provision and practice. The student will explore responses to addiction and substance misuse through harm reduction programmes, relapse prevention, treatment planning and a care continuum. Current theory, policy and relevant research will also be analysed. As this is an ongoing and dynamic subject, the syllabus content will be expanded or modified, as the case may be, to reflect developments within addiction and substance misuse. In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.
