Overview

What is biodiversity and why is there a crisis? How should we approach nature conservation, and what steps are necessary to halt biodiversity loss and degradation of natural habitats?

This module sets out the basis for understanding and addressing biodiversity loss. It presents the rationale for conserving natural habitats: their ecological complexity, historical continuity, and biogeographical significance. Key habitat types in Ireland are examined; the reasons for habitat loss and degradation are discussed; and our role in managing habitats for the continued survival of indigenous flora and fauna is explored.

The module is suitable for those from a non-scientific background, including (but not limited to) those involved in planning and design of the built environment.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module the learner will be able to:

  • Describe biogeographical, historical and abiotic characteristics that give rise to the various habitat types
  • Identify habitat types and their key species
  • Apply habitat classification schemes and demonstrate the use of species distribution maps
  • Explain and discuss nature conservation significance, designations and assessments
  • Recognise and assess human impacts on semi-natural habitats

Overview

A successful candidate will be able to demonstrate understanding of the range of services offered by architects and delivering those services in a manner prioritising the interests of the client and other stakeholders. The candidate will have the skills necessary to provide a competent service, both singly and as part of a team, including understanding of client needs, appropriate communication, programming, coordination and competent delivery. This will be supported by a knowledge of the Irish building control system, the obligations placed on an architect when acting in the statutory role of Assigned Certifier under the Building Control Act.

A successful candidate will be able to demonstrate understanding of Irish construction procurement processes, and the roles of built environment professionals. The candidate will have the skills necessary to plan project-related tasks, coordinate and engage in design team interaction, execute effective contract communication and resolve construction-related challenges and disputes. This will be supported by an understanding of contractual relationships, the obligations upon an architect acting as contract administrator, job-related administrative systems and the management of projects in the context of the candidate's professional experience.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module the learner will be able to:

Overview

The Energy Modelling Tools using PHPP module is designed to enable experienced building design professionals to develop and apply an understanding of the international Passive House Planning Pack (PHPP) modelling and design software to determine the building performance of existing and new buildings, whether residential or nonresidential, in temperate climatic zones such as Ireland or the UK.

The module requires the application of calculation theories and methodologies and energy modelling protocols to meet the Nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) performance standard. It develops skills in the application of advanced tools in modelling and designing buildings and explores techniques for upgrading geometry, fabric and services installations to achieve the nZEB design performance standard, using the internationally recognised Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) energy performance design tool.

It employs project-based learning techniques to explore, propose and determine case-specific building, fabric and energy systems solutions that deliver energy performance comparable with the nZEB performance standard through the application of the PHPP design tool.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module the learner will be able to:

  • Appraise the Passive House Standard and PHPP as an energy analysis tool.
  • Critically apply the PHPP tool in the energy analysis of the geometry and fabric of a conventional Irish building with typical forms and construction.
  • Critically apply the PHPP tool in the selection of building services and plant for the provision of heating, cooling and hot water in an Irish building of typical construction.
  • Apply the PHPP design tool at a professional level to optimise the design of a building to Passive House Standard.

Overview

The Hygrothermal Risk Assessment for Building Performance module enables learners to explore and critique the applied building physics and conventions of hygrothermal calculation and risk evaluation, and their use in creating high quality building fabric performance specifications.

It engages the learner in the analysis and evaluation of the relevant standards and validated software used in the steady state calculation of hygrothermal risk for a limited group of construction components, and the transient numerical simulation of hygrothermal risk for all construction components.

The module enables the learner to differentiate and appraise underlying building physics principles and calculation conventions to specify building construction assemblies which satisfy hygrothermal performance requirements and to conclude when specialist guidance is needed.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module the learner will be able to:

  • Calculate and critique certain hygrothermal risks in a residential building using appropriate steady state software applications.
  • Simulate and critique hygrothermal risks in a residential building using appropriate transient numerical software applications.
  • Appraise the ways a detailed knowledge of hygrothermal material characteristics, boundary conditions and features of a transient numerical software application can support parametric moisture risk assessment.
  • Appraise and evaluate applied building physics principles and the main conventions used for hygrothermal risk assessment to support the creation of high quality building fabric performance specifications.
  • Advise a client what constitutes nZEB construction with a low moisture risk and determine when the complexity of assessment requires specialist input.

They will have the skills necessary to engage in business administration and ability to resource, plan, implement and record project tasks to achieve stated goals, either individually or within a team. This will be supported by knowledge of the office systems, administration procedures and the relevant legislation as well as understanding of the briefing process, forms and terms of appointment, the means of professional remuneration, relevant legislation, and the execution of appropriate programmed and coordinated project tasks.

A successful candidate will be able to demonstrate understanding of the legal context, Irish construction and contract law, within which an architect must operate. They will have the skills necessary to plan project-related tasks, coordinate and engage in design team interaction, execute effective contract communication and resolve construction-related challenges and disputes. Overview

The nZEB Policy & Technologies module is presented in two components, the first covering nZEB policy and legislation, the second covering nZEB building technologies. The policy and legislation component is designed to develop an understanding of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) and Energy Performance in Buildings Directive (EPBD), which have led to the transposition of the Nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) performance standard in the Irish statutory and regulatory environment.

It explores European and national policies in building energy efficiency and nZEB, and explores the legal and policy issues necessary for building design professionals to be able to influence the shift to nZEB design and construction for residential and non-residential buildings.

The building technologies component is designed to enable experienced building design professionals to develop an understanding of the emerging technologies used in the nZEB performance standard with a focus on the use of materials and installations suitable for the design of building solutions in nZEB dwelling design and retrofit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module the learner will be able to:

  • Advise on key EU policies and legislative frameworks that underpin mandatory requirements for Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB) across Europe.
  • Advise on changes to key Irish legislation and the Building Regulations due to transposition of nZEB Standard in Ireland, and resulting requirements for compliance with Part-L of the Building Regulations for both residential and non-residential buildings.
  • Appraise energy use in the Irish residential buildings, and advise on appropriate energy efficiency design strategies to achieve nZEB in residential new build and retrofit.
  • Appraise energy use in Irish non-residential buildings and use typologies, and advise on appropriate energy efficiency design strategies to achieve nZEB in new build and retrofit.
  • Appraise alternative & renewable energy systems so as to advise on energy strategies to achieve nZEB.

Overview

This is a professional development module in advanced theory, implementation, design, practical applications, and legislative & planning frameworks around Active Travel infrastructure.

The aim of this module is to allow students to develop the necessary skills to identify the most applicable approaches to design, appraisal and implementation of active travel infrastructure within a variety of urban and rural contexts. The module will introduce case studies and expose students to active evaluation of active travel projects.  The module will demonstrate how Active Travel can play a central role in a sustainable mobility framework.

The module is suited to individuals from multi-disciplinary backgrounds and who may be involved in the planning, design, implementation and evaluation of Active Travel Infrastructure.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module the learner will be able to:

  • Identify the appropriate Key Legislative Frameworks and Mechanisms for a given Active Travel Infrastructure scheme
  • Evaluate Active Travel Infrastructure schemes in a given context
  • Plan the Design, Implementation and Maintenance stages for a given Active Travel Infrastructure scheme
  • Critically discuss the challenges of integrating the Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems design together with the design of Active Travel infrastructure

Overview

The Thermal Bridge Calculation for Building Performance module provides learners with an introduction to the applied building physics and conventions of critical surface temperature calculation (fRsi), and their use in creating high quality building performance designs to the Nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) standard as transposed in Part L of the Building Regulations.

The focus of the module is on the application of this theoretical knowledge, through the use of numerical analysis software, to quantify 2D linear thermal transmittance values and surface temperature factors.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module the learner will be able to:

  • Apply relevant applied building physics, and standards and conventions for calculation of linear thermal transmittance values and surface temperature factors as per the requirements of the Irish Building Regulations.
  • Use appropriate validated software to quantify linear thermal transmittance values and surface temperature factors associated with junctions of the thermal envelope of a building in accordance with standards and conventions as per the requirements of the Irish Building Regulations.
  • Critically assess building junction designs of new-build and retrofit residential buildings to mitigate risks and optimise building fabric thermal performance.
  • Advise a client what constitutes nZEB construction with thermal risk and determine when the complexity of assessment requires specialist input.
